noise: the unwanted medium
by juliette wallace
first published by the courtauld institute of art, london, in 2015, this original work was reprinted by pity party publishing in 2024. spanning two centuries, Juliette wallace’s thesis on the origins of noise and its introduction into the sanitised gallery space presents this ‘unwanted medium’ as a powerful tool for the controversial and influential futurists, the innovative samplers of the early 1900s and the avant-guard fluxus movement to the contemporary art space.
from the industrial revolution, to pierre Schafer to john cage, this work takes the reader on a noisy ride through the dread of noise to noise-stalgia.
